Ten Principles for Smart Growth
Smart growth is an approach to development that encourages a mix of building types and uses, diverse housing and transportation options, development within existing neighborhoods, and community engagement.
Chris Zimmerman, VP of Smart Growth America will discuss the 10 principles considered the foundation of a smart growth approach.
With Albemarle County’s Comprehensive Plan calling for urban growth nodes, (perhaps eventually linked by Bus Rapid Transit BRT,) and with the City of Charlottesville also considering new concentrated growth nodes in addition to the Downtown Charlottesville and University areas, a Smart Growth strategy is highly appropriate for the (re)development of these urban mixed-use neighborhoods.
Mr. Zimmerman was also an Arlington County Supervisor during their master planning of the Columbia Pike Corridor which is a transit-oriented redevelopment which utilizes Form Based Code and incentivizes affordable housing.
