Project Overview:
The VCU Health Children’s Hospital is a ground-up, 20-story, 600,000+-sq.-ft. full-service acute care children’s hospital including in-patient beds, Emergency Department, Cafeteria/Kitchen, Surgery, and Helipad on Roof, and 4 levels of below grade parking. The building structure will consist of 12-stories of slab on metal deck steel structure over 8-stories cast-in-place concrete, sitting on a mat slab foundation. The new hospital tower, adjacent to and connected to the existing Children’s Hospital Pavilion, will also involve some renovation of the existing facility to support acute care services.
Status of Construction:
The project started in April of 2019 and is scheduled to be complete at the end of 2022 with a 2023 opening. Currently the structure is complete and exterior system is nearly complete. The tower cranes, which were installed on the top of the existing Children’s Hospital Pavilion, are being removed. The interior and MEP System trades have started framing, hanging, and rough-in scopes and are progressing up the building. The entire project was modeled using VDC which is being used for coordination, sequencing, and project planning.
