Career Development Program for Women of Color
This program, launched April 2021, will help increase the visibility and leadership opportunities for young women of color, provide them with relevant and helpful guidance in their early stages of their career, leading to a brighter and more diverse future for the Urban Land Institute (ULI), our industry, and our world. While it will start with 4 women, the impact those women make will continuously advance the effort to raise the number of women leaders, and hopefully provide visible role models for younger women and girls of color to embrace and look up to. This can and will be measured by the personal testimonies of the women this program will award, who will complete a capstone project, where they will work together to organize and host an event at the conclusion of the year, in which they will share their experience. This event will be open to all ULI members and guests. Marketing, advertising and PR will be provided by the WLI committee to promote the event and the graduates of the program, further increasing their visibility and
The program will fund 4 women’s year-long journey to increase their knowledge, visibility and network within ULI and the Virginia real estate industry. The program will subsidize the cost of annual membership (for the year of the award), as well as 3 locally based ULI event tickets, 2 regional event tickets, and their ticket to The Jeffie Awards.
Each month, the women will have a 1-hour long Zoom meeting (or in-person, depending on feasibility with COVID) with a different mentor, to guide them through their year, providing advice and mentorship in subjects highly relevant to a young woman new to the industry. Examples of these topics could include: a one-on-one architectural tour of Richmond by an influential female architect, one-on-one workshops for LinkedIn and resume building with a marketing or HR professional, guidance on how to begin and maintain their portfolio of work, as well as less-structured mentorship calls, which would allow the scholarship winners to discuss issues relevant to them personally.
